I won't go into the graphic detail, because it's been done over at Kos:

There's also a nice running series over at Grist: http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2007/8/ 25/04329/9087
Hopefully people have heard that a) mountain top removal mining (ripping the tops off of mountains to scoop out the coal within) is terribly and b) the Bush Administration wants to expand the coal industry's ability to do it.
Seriously, this is a horrible practice which needs to be stopped not expanded. One small silver lining is that the Office of Surface Mining has only proposed expanding coal's power, and it's up for a 60-day comment period.
Environmental Action has set up a site to submit your comment:
http://www.environmental-action.org/envi roaction.asp?id=2435&id4=BLOG
They're not taking e-comments, so all submissions will be printed out by EA and sent in pre-deadline. We're shooting for 20K, so let's hook it up.

On his website, Sen. Obama states, "Will we stand by while drought and famine, storms and floods overtake our planet? Or will we look back at today and say that this was the moment when we took a stand? That this was the moment when we began to turn things around?"
An excellent question, to which I must respond with a question of my own. Why the hell are you championing liquid coal technology? For those of you unclear, or confused about this idea, here's a little background:

Earlier this week, about 2000 Environmental Action members emailed Coke, and asked them to use their power to help get the polar bear listed under the Endangered Species Act. Listing the bear would be a huge step in stopping global warming, as it would open up provisions of the ESA to be used in the fight.

Tucked away at the very end of 2006, the Fish and Wildlife service finally proposed listing the polar bear as 'threatened' under the Endangered Species Act.
This followed a year of feet dragging on their part, and required a lawsuit by environmental groups for FWS to even look at the petition to list the polar bear.
And now that the proposal is out there, we need to pounce on it, and make the listing happen.

A few months back (January), it was discovered that NASA was censoring one of their top global warming scientists. A ton of blogs covered the issue, thousands of emails were sent, and eventually, the PR flack responsible for the censorship quit his job, and NASA announced a new policy of openness.
Well, it appears that the lesson was not learned throughout all parts of the Federal Government. It was announced today that now the Department of Commerce is censoring a scientist at the NOAA who made a link between global warming and an increase in hurricane activity.
Rep. Waxman from CA is investigating this through the House Committee on Government Reform, and ABC News even picked up the story.
